The participants in the strategy-structure track will be coordinating their efforts with those in the process tracks. Consequently, they must all learn that task flow is just another way of talking about the core processes within and between work units—with a clear focus on value-added processes. Figure 4.17 makes this important translation explicit by showing how the containment of task flow is precisely what brings value-added processes under the direct control of the members of every subunit. The essence of radical process improvement (reengineering) is designing the operational structure around an organization’s business processes (P), subsuming the flow of inputs (I) from suppliers and the flow of outputs (O) to customers.
